It's Unicode characters that just happen to look like flipped letters. "a" turns into "ɐ", "b" into "q", "h" into "ɥ", stuff like that. Flip the letters and reverse the order together, and tilting your head or flipping your screen makes it read normally again. That's the whole trick.

Some do, like "1" flipping to "Ɩ" or "?" flipping to "¿". Anything without a Unicode equivalent just passes through unchanged.
